Frequently Asked Questions

What is Arctic Assets Bookkeeping and who do you serve?

I'm Lisa Dennis, owner of Arctic Assets Bookkeeping — a small business bookkeeping service based in Palmer, Alaska. I'm a U.S. veteran, and I started this business because I genuinely enjoy helping small business owners get their finances organized so they can focus on what they do best. I work with sole proprietors, LLCs, S-Corps, and small businesses of all kinds across the Matanuska-Susitna Valley and remotely throughout the U.S. If your books feel overwhelming or out of control, that's exactly the kind of situation I love to help with.

What bookkeeping services do you offer?

I offer four core services, plus a handful of add-ons depending on what your business needs:

Core Services:

Diagnostic Review — Every new client starts here. I do a thorough review of your current bookkeeping situation to identify issues and get a clear picture of what your books actually need. This also allows me to give you accurate, honest pricing for any additional work.

QuickBooks Online (QBO) Setup & Catchup — If you're not in QBO yet, I'll get you set up. If you're already there but behind, I'll catch everything up to the current date.

Cleanup — Based on what the Diagnostic Review uncovers, I'll correct errors, miscategorizations, and inconsistencies to get your books accurate and current.

Monthly Bookkeeping — Ongoing transaction classification, reconciliations for bank, credit card, loan, and merchant accounts, financial report generation, and a monthly review meeting with you.

Add-On Services:

Accounts Payable management

Accounts Receivable management

Payroll management

Receipts management

Do I need to have QuickBooks already set up to work with you?

Not at all! If you don't have QuickBooks Online yet, I can set it up for your business from scratch. And if you're already using QBO but things have gotten a bit messy or behind, I can catch up your records and clean them up so everything is accurate and current. Either way, we'll start with a Diagnostic Review so I know exactly what we're working with before diving in.

What is a bookkeeping cleanup, and do I need one?

A bookkeeping cleanup is the process of going through your financial records and correcting errors, miscategorized transactions, missing entries, and inconsistencies. You might need one if your books are behind, your tax preparer has flagged problems, your reports don't look quite right, or you've simply never had a professional set of eyes on your records. I always start with a Diagnostic Review before doing any cleanup work — that way I know the full scope of what needs to be addressed and can give you an accurate quote before we begin.

What is a Diagnostic Review and what does it include?

The Diagnostic Review is where every client relationship begins. I do a thorough assessment of your existing bookkeeping records — whether you're in QuickBooks, another system, or a shoebox of receipts — to identify problems, gaps, and inconsistencies. It's a bit like a financial check-up for your business. Beyond just identifying issues, the Diagnostic Review is also how I'm able to give you accurate, realistic pricing for any cleanup or ongoing work. Every business is different, and I don't think it's fair to quote a number without actually understanding what I'm working with.

How does monthly bookkeeping work?

Once we're set up and your books are in good shape, I handle your bookkeeping every month so you don't have to think about it. That includes classifying all your transactions, reconciling your bank accounts, credit cards, loans, and merchant accounts, and producing your financial reports. I also schedule a monthly review meeting with you to go over the numbers together. My goal is that you always know how your business is doing financially — not just that your books are done, but that they're actually useful to you.

What add-on services do you offer?

In addition to core bookkeeping, I offer several add-on services for businesses that need a little more support:

Accounts Payable — Making sure your bills and vendor payments are tracked and managed accurately.

Accounts Receivable — Keeping tabs on what's owed to your business and making sure it's recorded correctly.

Payroll Management — Handling the bookkeeping side of payroll so your records stay clean and compliant.

Receipts Management — Organizing and categorizing your receipts so nothing falls through the cracks.

These are available as add-ons to monthly bookkeeping clients. If you think you might need one of these, just mention it during our consultation and we can talk through what makes sense for your business.

Do you work with businesses outside of Palmer, Alaska?

Yes! I'm based in Palmer, AK and love working with businesses here in the Mat-Su Valley, but I work with clients remotely across Alaska and throughout the United States. Everything runs through QuickBooks Online and a secure client portal, so distance really isn't an issue. If you're looking for a bookkeeper you can actually communicate with and who will show up for you, I'd love to connect regardless of where you're located.

What software do you use?

I work primarily with QuickBooks Online (QBO). It's cloud-based, which means we both have access to your financial data anytime, anywhere. If you're not in QBO yet, I can get you set up. If you're using something else, we can talk through whether a transition makes sense for your business. I'll always be upfront with you about what I think is the right tool for your situation.

How do I get started?

The first step is a free consultation call — you can book one at arcticassetsbookkeeping.com or just call me at (907) 615-6016. During the call, I'll learn a bit about your business and your current bookkeeping situation. From there, all new clients begin with a Diagnostic Review, which gives us both a clear picture of where things stand and allows me to give you accurate pricing for whatever work needs to follow.

Is Arctic Assets Bookkeeping a good fit for my business?

Honestly, I work best with small business owners who want to hand off the numbers to someone they can trust and actually hear from. If you're overwhelmed by your finances, behind on your books, or just tired of trying to figure it out on your own, I'd love to help. I work with sole proprietors, LLCs, S-Corps, and a variety of industries. I'm not the right fit for every business, and I'd rather be upfront about that than take on a client I can't serve well — so our consultation is also a chance for both of us to make sure it's a good match.

What's the difference between a bookkeeper and an accountant or CPA?

A bookkeeper — which is what I do — handles the day-to-day recording and organization of your financial transactions: categorizing income and expenses, reconciling accounts, and producing financial reports. A CPA or accountant typically uses those records to file your taxes, provide strategic financial advice, or conduct audits. Clean, accurate books make your CPA's job much easier — and can even reduce your accounting fees. I've had multiple CPAs tell me that my clients' books are some of the cleanest they've seen, which I'm always grateful to hear.

Is my financial information kept confidential?

Absolutely. Trustworthiness is something I take very seriously — it's a core value of how I operate. Your financial records are sensitive, and I handle them with the same care and discretion I'd want someone to give my own. All data is managed through secure, cloud-based systems, and I adhere to professional standards for confidentiality.

How much does bookkeeping cost for a small business?

I'm not able to give accurate pricing based on a consultation call alone — and I wouldn't want to give you a number that turns out to be wrong. That's one of the main reasons every new client starts with a Diagnostic Review. Once I've had a chance to actually look at your books, I can give you a clear, honest quote for any cleanup or ongoing work. The cost varies depending on the size and complexity of your business and the volume of transactions. I'm always transparent about pricing and will never surprise you with unexpected fees.

What are the signs that my bookkeeping needs attention?

Some common signs it's time to get professional help: your books are months (or years) behind, your bank accounts haven't been reconciled, your profit and loss reports don't look right, your tax preparer has asked you to fix things before they can file, or you genuinely don't know how much money your business is making. These are all situations I see regularly, and they're exactly what I'm here to help with. It's never too messy — I've seen it all, and I don't judge.

Why should I hire a bookkeeper instead of doing it myself?

Bookkeeping takes time, attention to detail, and a specific kind of expertise that most business owners didn't go into business to develop. When you try to do it yourself while also running your business, something usually suffers — either the books or the business. Hiring a professional means your records are accurate, reconciled, and current every month, and you get to spend your time on the things only you can do. As one of my clients put it: "Lisa manages my monthly bookkeeping with precision, giving me peace of mind and allowing me to focus on running my practice." That's exactly what I'm going for.

Is Arctic Assets Bookkeeping veteran-owned?

Yes — I'm a U.S. veteran, and I'm proud of it. I try to bring the same values I learned in the military to my bookkeeping practice: discipline, precision, integrity, and a commitment to doing the job right. If supporting veteran-owned businesses matters to you, I appreciate that more than I can say.
